Land Redemption - Duties and Responsibilities
The Land Redemption Department handles the collection of property taxes
after the Tax Collector has sold them at a tax sale. If a landowner does
not pay his property taxes for any given year by the end of August, the
land is sold for taxes. To redeem his property, the owner must pay taxes
and penalties to the Land Redemption Department within two years of the
date of the tax sale; otherwise the tax purchaser can claim title to the
property. Land Redemption personnel send notices to landowners and mortgage-holders
before the tax sale matures and issue tax deeds to the tax purchasers
if the property is not redeemed.
This department also reviews homestead exemption applications and forwards
the information to the State Tax Commission. Disallowed homestead exemptions
are returned to this department for further action.
Other duties include supervising the printing of the land and personal
property rolls each year and processing changes to these rolls for the
Board of Supervisors.
